This Sunday: Lent 2
This Sunday, 17 March is the second Sunday of Lent. The 8 am mass has no hymns and a sermon while the 9.30 mass has hymns with a choir and a sermon, and there is morning tea afterwards. The Gospel reading is on the Transfigeration. Our main mass starts with the traditional Litany, sung in procession. There will be said Evensong with no hymns from the Book of Common Prayer at 4 pm this Sunday. We pray today especially for our Moslem brothers and sisters killed and injured in Christchurch, NZ.
The Lodge Service
Once a month we hold an Anglican service in the local nursing home, The Lodge, at Wayville. Our next service there is Wednesday 20 March at 11.15 am.
Gregorian Chant Group
Our chant group will meet again on Wednesday 20 March from 7.30 to 8.30 in the Parish Hall.
Here’s a summary of what we can look forward to singing over the coming weeks: psalm 134 (133) ‘Ecce nunc benedicite Dominum.’ We’ve already learned this in English as ‘Behold now, praise the Lord.’ The hymn ‘Te Lucis ante Terminum’ in the Festal Tone. ‘Nunc Dimittis’ with the ‘Lumen’ antiphon in time for Candlemas on 2 February. The Marian antiphon ‘Alma redemptoris Mater’ and the Kyrie from the Missa Primitiva. The aim is to learn and sing the complete mass setting including Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.
The group meets weekly during school term. It will meet next at 9.45 am in the hall on 21 March 2019. We will start reading Josephus’ Jewish Wars.
Stations of the Cross
This devotion, following the way of Our Lord to the Cross on Good Friday, is held every Friday in Lent at 4.30 pm. The next date will be 22 March.
Next Sunday: Lent 3
Next Sunday, 24 March is the third Sunday of Lent. The 8 am mass has no hymns and a sermon while the 9.30 mass has hymns with a choir and a sermon, and there is morning tea afterwards. Our main mass starts with the traditional Litany, sung in procession. There will be said Evensong with no hymns from the Book of Common Prayer at 4 pm this Sunday.
There is a mass or meeting once a month for oblates of St Benedict and others interested in the religious life. The mass includes a reading from the Rule of St Benedict and is followed by a shared lunch. Our next meeting will be 30 March. At our last meeting we welcomed our new oblate Claudia Lucy.
The St George’s Fellowship Group will meet next time on Tuesday 2 April.
Every month, usually on the first Friday, we remember at a special requiem all those whose year’s mind falls in that month, the recently departed, and any others for whom prayers are requested. Our next monthly requiem is on Friday 5 April at 5.15 pm.
Parish Council meets next on Sunday 14 April, 2019 at 11 am.
Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham
This meets next on Saturday 4 May at 9 am for mass followed by a shared breakfast.
St George’s Day
We celebrate this on Sunday 5 May, as its usual date of 23 April is displaced by Easter. The masses that day will be 8 am and 10.30, not 9.30 am. Our guest preacher will be Fr Jesse Poole from Victor Harbor.
This meets next on Sunday 19 May, 2019 at 11 am.
